The outcome of Medea’s Room is a classical story of Medea repeatedly taking place in the modern world: in newspapers’ healdlines and in criminal action TV reports. The content for the performance is realised through a creative workshop with young actors. The performers are exploring instances of violence that they experienced themselves along with those experienced by their relatives. These are cases of violence that are not usually analyzed or spoken about in public. In Medea’s Room, the creative team is asking the inconvenient questions: where does violence come from? Where a man’s urge to destroy is rooted? Why a human is hurting other human?

The performance’s connections with the myth of Ancient Greece itself or the interpretations of it made by Euripid and J. Anouilh are rather assosiative than direct. What is left from the Ancient myth of Medea betrayed by Jason killing her children is merely a 10 min long incentive of violence that is showed in the beginning of the play as a rapid, direct intro to the performance exploring the pathos of Medea’s behaviour. The viewer is asked to look for parallels between the grotesque representation of an Ancient myth and the way more intimate stage action that is based on real life events. In Medea’s Room the actors are aiming to connect the spaces of the stage and viewers with the instances of violence told to the public using performative representation. A sensitive, open and multi-layered case study of violence is unraveled.
